Health IT Investment: Clinics Eye Tough Purchasing, Interface Decisions

California's community clinics and small physician practices face mounting pressures from numerous quarters — funders, payers, government, and, of late, the public — to step up health information technology (IT) adoption, engage in population health and disease management, and embrace the electronic health record (EHR). Many are finding this a tall order to fill.

Besides the funding of big-ticket IT investments, these provider organizations must make strategic decisions regarding product choice, implementation timing, and integration with existing systems. Related guidance, however, is in short supply.

Three recent publications from the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) provide a detailed look at the issues clinics and practices wrestle with as they upgrade IT infrastructure. Following are summaries of the publications:
